How to read this ranking
Position one is our pick. It is an editorial judgement, made against the five criteria set out under How we rate and against nothing else, and the number beside it is a count of how many of those five it meets.
The twelve companies under it are listed, not scored. None of them has been put through those five criteria. Each carries instead a short label drawn only from its own row in the dataset: its Google star average, how many ratings that average rests on, or what its own trading name says it sells. A label is a note on the row, not a verdict on the company.
The star averages and the rating counts printed beside those twelve are Google's numbers, not ours. They come from a Google Maps pull dated 23 August 2026 and they belong to the businesses they describe. For Keys Roofing this file publishes no star average and no rating count at all, because Keys states neither on its own site and this desk does not invent figures for anybody.

Keys Roofing takes the top slot on shape rather than on volume. It does roofing, gutters and downspouts and declines everything else, which is the opposite of the exteriors model most of this market runs. On an older Kirkwood house under a heavy canopy the roof and the drainage are one problem, and a contractor who carries both trades is a contractor who cannot hand the water off to somebody else and call the job finished.
Keys does same-day installs. When the crew and the material line up, the roof that was quoted can be the roof that goes on, rather than a date three weeks out. That is not a guarantee and this page will not print it as one, because weather, decking and supply all get a vote. It is a description of what a locally owned crew is able to do, and it belongs with the 24 hour response time Keys publishes on its own site.

How we rate
One entry on this page is scored. Twelve are listed. Here is the whole of the method, written out, so that you can disagree with it on the merits rather than guess at it.
The five criteria, and what each one asks
- Scope discipline. Does the company do roofing and the water that comes off it, and stop there? A roofer who also sells siding, windows and commercial work is running several businesses off one truck.
- Water handled end to end. Does it carry gutters and downspouts as real trades rather than as an afterthought, including where the water goes once it has left the downspout? Under a Kirkwood canopy that is not a small question.
- Owner led. Is the person who quotes the job accountable for the job, or does the number come from a commissioned closer you never see again?
- A stated shingle line. Does the company name in the open which shingles it installs, so that two proposals can be priced against the same product, rather than fitting whatever the supply house discounted that week?
- Licensed and insured. Is it stated plainly, and is the company content to have it checked at the counter?
How the score is derived
Each criterion is a yes or a no. The score is a count of the ones met, out of five, and nothing is weighted. Keys Roofing meets all five, so it carries 5 of 5. That figure is a count of criteria on our own scorecard. It is not a Google star rating, it is not a review score, and it is not a percentage of anything.
Why the rest carry labels instead of scores
We have not run the other twelve companies through those five criteria, so we print no criteria score against them. What we print instead is a short label taken strictly from that company's own row: its Google star average, how many ratings that average rests on, or what its own trading name says it sells. Nothing in a label is a judgement about craft, tenure or reputation, because the dataset does not hold any of those things.
The data behind positions two to thirteen
- Source. Google Maps business listings, three pulls covering St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Chesterfield, deduped on placeId.
- Pull date. 23 August 2026. Averages move after a pull date. A printed table does not.
- Category filter. Only rows whose Google categoryName is exactly "Roofing contractor", which is 225 of the 263 rated rows in the file. The same file holds "Gutter cleaning service" and "Gutter service" rows, which in this market are largely pressure washing and window cleaning businesses. They are not roofers and they are not published here.
- Geography filter. Only businesses whose registered address is in Kirkwood, Missouri. All twelve of them sit in the 63122 postcode.
- Rating filter. A business needs both a star average and a rating count to appear at all. Unrated listings are left out rather than ranked last.
- Order. Star average first, number of ratings as the tie breaker. That order governs positions two to thirteen only. Position one is editorial and sits outside it.
What the twelve Google figures do not measure
- Quality of work. A rating count measures how much feedback a business has collected, which correlates with volume and with how hard it asks. It does not measure whether a roof was installed correctly.
- Licensing. Nothing in this dataset says whether any of these companies is licensed by the City of Kirkwood. A registered address in town is not a city licence. Ask the city, every time.
- Whether they will come to you. Registered address is where the paperwork lives, not where the trucks go. Roofing needs yard and fleet space, so companies cluster where a municipality zones for it and drive out from there.
- Sample size. Four of the twelve have fewer than ten ratings. A perfect score across a handful of ratings and a strong score across several hundred are not comparable quantities, and sorting by rating alone flatters the former.
One genuinely interesting thing about the twelve
The addresses cluster. Three of the twelve sit on Leffingwell Avenue, two more on Grand Avenue and two on Kirkwood Road. That is not a coincidence, it is zoning. Roofing is a trade that needs a yard, a dumpster, a place to load and somewhere to park a fleet, and a municipality either makes room for that inside its limits or it does not. Kirkwood does, on a handful of specific streets. Several affluent municipalities nearby have no roofing contractors registered inside them at all, for exactly the inverse reason.
It is a small thing, but it is the kind of fact that a real dataset produces and a marketing page never does.
Twelve businesses in one small city, seven of them on three streets. That is what a town that still zones for a trade looks like.

A ranking of this kind is worth something only if you take the next step. Pick two or three names, then ask each of them the licensing questions, and then confirm the answers with the City of Kirkwood building division rather than accepting them. The names not on that list, and what their own paperwork says
The twelve above are the roofing contractors that hold a Kirkwood address. They are not the twelve names most likely to knock on a Kirkwood door. A good deal of the quoting in this city is done by national brands, franchise networks and metro wide operators whose nearest office is in another county, another metro or another state. Its About page says: "Beginning in Indiana, with our headquarters in Indianapolis, we expanded to include offices in Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee." The same page says the company "has grown through merger and acquisition of companies that align with our company mission, values and culture", and that "The Bone Dry Family of Companies spans eight states". Its location picker lists eighteen offices, St. Louis among them. Its service menu runs roofing, gutters and downspouts, masonry, insulation, siding, painting, drywall, solar and commercial roofing.

Its site footer gives its home office as "Home Office 5000 Overton Plaza, Suite 200 Fort Worth, TX 76109". Its main navigation carries the item "Own a Franchise", and the site says its locations are owned by franchise owners. Its service menu runs roofing, gutters, siding, windows, painting, emergency tarping and commercial roofing.

John Beal Roofing
Its own site calls it "A Leading Roofing Company in the Midwest". Its locations menu lists St. Louis and Chesterfield in Missouri and Edwardsville in Illinois. Its service menu includes commercial roofing (TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen, flat and metal), vinyl and aluminium siding, gutters and roof coating.
St. Charles
Schneider Roofing and Remodeling
Its own site says it is family owned and based in St. Charles, Missouri. Its financing line reads "Make Your House Look Like New for as Low as a Cup of Coffee a Day... With Our Unique Financing Options!" Its service menu includes siding, soffit and fascia, and commercial roofing (TPO, EPDM, built-up), as well as roofing and gutters.

What that comparison is, and what it is not
None of the above is a charge against any of those five companies. Every sentence in those cards is theirs, published on their own site, and building a roofing business across a lot of states is a legitimate way to build one. It is simply a different way, and the difference is worth understanding before a contract is signed.
A company that publishes more than eighty five locations, or eighteen offices across eight states, or a franchise network run from a home office in Fort Worth, is built to a different shape than a crew that works one metro and is owned by the person who quotes the work. That is a statement about footprint, taken from their own pages, and it carries no suggestion about how any of them runs a job. A company whose own service menu also lists siding, windows, masonry, solar, painting and drywall has chosen breadth, and that is its own published choice as well. Keys has chosen the opposite of both: one town's worth of trades, done by the people who quoted them.
That is also where the same-day install comes from. A crew dispatched from an office in another state cannot turn a Kirkwood roof the same day the way a local owner led crew can, and it is not an accusation against that office to say so. It is arithmetic about drive time and where the crews already are.
Read the five cards, then the sixth. Every fact in the first five is quoted or taken from that company's own website. The conclusion is yours to draw.
Why none of the five is in the ranked file. The ranking on this page takes only businesses whose registered address is inside Kirkwood. Best Choice Roofing, Storm Guard and John Beal Roofing hold no rated listing in the dataset behind this page at all. Bone Dry Roofing and Schneider Roofing and Remodeling do hold rated listings in the wider metro file, at registered addresses in St Peters and St. Charles respectively, and those towns are not this one. No figure has been created, moved or adjusted for any company named on this page.
